The ladder moved down seven numbers
The October 22, 2026 patch did not just rebalance Black Shrine - Donghae (Solo). It replaced the difficulty scale. Three old tiers were each sliced into three new rungs, and the numbering restarted lower, which means every guide, Discord message and guild chat from before October 22 now refers to a tier that does not exist.
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Calamity 8 | Calamity 1-3 |
| Calamity 9 | Calamity 4-6 |
| Calamity 10 | Calamity 7-9 |
The official notes anchor the mapping from the bottom: Calamity 1 was tuned to be similar to the previous Calamity 8 fights against Golden Pig King, Sangoon and Gumiho. So the new Calamity 1 is the old Calamity 8, and everything above it is new granularity inside what used to be three coarse tiers. If someone tells you a boss "drops well at Calamity 9", ask them for a date. Under the old numbering that was the second-hardest gear-gated tier; under the new numbering it is the hardest rung currently available.
Calamity 10 is the other half of the story. It has been made unavailable, removed from Adventure Log - Boss Storybook - Morning Light, and Pearl Abyss says it will return later at a higher difficulty. Adventurers who met the completion requirements but had not claimed the Adventure Log reward received it in the Black Spirit's Safe during maintenance. Until Calamity 10 comes back, the ceiling of the mode is Calamity 9, and the highest AP requirement anywhere in Black Shrine is 430.
Two things happened at once: the ladder was relabelled, and the bottom rung was fitted with a lock. Only one of them is a cosmetic change.
Every tier now has an AP gate, and the floor is 300
This is the table to bookmark. Minimum AP, by boss and by Calamity, exactly as published:
| Boss | C1 | C2 | C3 | C4 | C5 | C6 | C7 | C8 | C9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Pig King | 300 | 315 | 330 | 345 | 360 | 375 | 390 | 405 | 420 |
| Apex Changui | 300 | 315 | 330 | 345 | 360 | 375 | 390 | 405 | 420 |
| Songakshi | 300 | 315 | 330 | 345 | 360 | 375 | 390 | 405 | 420 |
| Sangoon | 300 | 315 | 330 | 345 | 360 | 375 | 390 | 405 | 420 |
| Gumiho | 300 | 315 | 330 | 345 | 360 | 375 | 390 | 405 | 420 |
| Bari | 305 | 320 | 335 | 350 | 365 | 380 | 395 | 410 | 425 |
| Bamboo Legion Lieutenant | 305 | 320 | 335 | 350 | 365 | 380 | 395 | 410 | 425 |
| Duoksini | 305 | 320 | 335 | 350 | 365 | 380 | 395 | 410 | 425 |
| Oduksini | 310 | 325 | 340 | 355 | 370 | 385 | 400 | 415 | 430 |
| Imoogi | 310 | 325 | 340 | 355 | 370 | 385 | 400 | 415 | 430 |
Three numbers govern the whole grid. Every Calamity adds exactly 15 AP to the requirement, and the nine bosses fall into three bands offset by 5: the five original Morning Light bosses sit at 300, Bari and Bamboo Legion Lieutenant and Duoksini at 305, and Oduksini and Imoogi at 310. So minimum AP is 300 plus 15 times one less than the Calamity, plus a band offset of 0, 5 or 10. Check any cell against that formula and it holds.
The boss level column tells a second story that is easy to miss. Levels run 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 71, 72, 73 - two levels per Calamity up to Calamity 6, then one level per Calamity for the last three rungs, while the AP requirement keeps climbing by 15 each time. From Calamity 7 onward you are paying 15 AP per single boss level. That is the steepest part of the curve, and it is exactly where the guaranteed drops start, which is not a coincidence.
One practical note on the top of the range: the highest boss level in the mode is 73, and the character level cap went to 75 on October 8. No Black Shrine boss outlevels a capped character, so the level-based accuracy penalty is not a factor in deciding which tier you can handle. Only your gear is.
What the Light Orb removal actually took
Until October 22, Calamity 1 through 7 ran on the Light Orb system: your AP and DP were equalised for the fight regardless of your gear. Only Calamity 8 and above had a minimum AP requirement and asked you to bring your own stats. Pearl Abyss removed that system entirely, and the stated reason is disarmingly honest - as players' gear grew, Calamity 8 and above had become easier than Calamity 7, which broke the intended shape of the difficulty curve.
The consequence is not a nerf or a buff. It is a change in who can enter. A player below 300 AP used to be able to clear Calamity 1 through 7 with equalised stats and collect the weekly rewards; now they cannot enter any tier, because the cheapest rung on the entire grid is 300 AP. That is the single largest player-facing effect of the patch, and it is buried in a table row rather than stated as a design decision.
Pearl Abyss did compensate for the deleted item, and the compensation is larger than it first looks. Six quests paid Light Orbs. One, "[LoML] Gift from the Black Spirit", was removed with no replacement. The other five now pay Sangpyeong Coin x500 each:
| Quest | Reward |
|---|---|
| [LoML] Dokkebi's Gift | Sangpyeong Coin x500 |
| [LoML] Ruler of Taebaek | Sangpyeong Coin x500 |
| [LoML] Talekkebi's Trials - Calamity 3 | Sangpyeong Coin x500 |
| [LoML] Talekkebi's Trials - Calamity 5 | Sangpyeong Coin x500 |
| [LoML] Talekkebi's Trials - Calamity 6 | Sangpyeong Coin x500 |
| Total, once per Family | Sangpyeong Coin x2,500 |
Two thousand five hundred coins is not a token gesture. The Calamity 1 Oduksini weekly reward pays 54 to 60 coins, so the quest compensation is worth somewhere between 42 and 46 Calamity 1 clears. Players who had already completed those quests and claimed the Light Orbs did not lose out either - the coins were delivered to their Heidel Storage during maintenance, retroactively. If you have not done these quests, they are now the best-paying Sangpyeong Coin content in the game by a wide margin, and they do not require you to fight anything at a minimum AP you cannot reach.
The Hyperboost quests moved the other way. The [Black Spirit Support] entries that used to point at Calamity 8 and 9 were rewritten to point at Calamity 1 - Golden Pig King, Apex Changui, Sangoon and Gumiho - and all of them now require 300+ AP to accept. That is consistent with Calamity 1's new minimum of 300, and it means the Hyperboost line is more accessible than it was, because the old targets were gear-gated tiers. The Olvia Academy Journal objectives were remapped the same way, from "defeat Sangoon Calamity 9" to "defeat Sangoon Calamity 1".
The Oduksini ladder, tier by tier
The patch notes publish the full weekly Boss Blitz reward table for Oduksini at Calamity 1, 4, 7, 8 and 9 - not for every rung, and not for every boss. These are Rank 1-9 figures: Boss Blitz Rankings set your reward rank up to Rank 1, and higher ranks pay more guaranteed items and better chance-based drop rates. Items without a stated quantity drop as x1.
| Calamity | Min AP | Sangpyeong Coin | Embers of Hongik | Memory Fragment | Black Stone | Sealed BMC | Essence of Dawn | Gold Bar 1,000G | Tear of Illusion |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | 310 | 54-60 | 8-11 | 9-12 | 18-22 | 1 | 9-10 | 0-1 | Chance |
| C4 | 355 | 99-105 | 17-20 | 18-21 | 38-41 | 3 | 18-19 | 1-2 | Chance |
| C7 | 400 | 128-134 | 26-29 | 27-30 | 64-67 | 6 | 27-28 | 2-3 | Guaranteed |
| C8 | 415 | 134-137 | 29-32 | 30-33 | 69-72 | 6 | 30-31 | 3 | Guaranteed |
| C9 | 430 | 138-140 | 33-36 | 34-37 | 79-82 | 7 | 34-35 | 3-4 | Guaranteed |
Two things about that table deserve to be said plainly. The first is that the gaps between Calamity 7 and Calamity 9 are small in absolute terms - 10 to 12 Sangpyeong Coins and roughly 7 to 8 Embers of Hongik across two entire tiers - while the AP cost of those two tiers is 30. The second is that the same patch notes also list a guaranteed Tear of Illusion and Essence of Dawn Box at Calamity 7 and 8, and a guaranteed Faint Origin of Dark Hunger at Calamity 9, which is where the real value sits. The coin and ember columns are the visible numbers; the guaranteed rares are the reason to be there.
Do not extrapolate the missing rungs too confidently. Pearl Abyss published Calamity 1, 4, 7, 8 and 9 only. Calamity 2, 3, 5 and 6 sit between those points and almost certainly interpolate, but the published numbers are the only ones you can plan a weekly budget against. If you are choosing between an unpublished rung and a published one at similar AP, take the published one - you know what it pays.
Three things stop being rolls
The most important change in the entire rework is not a number in the AP table. It is which column an item sits in. Comparing the guaranteed list and the chance-based list across tiers shows three items changing sides, plus one item family that upgrades three times as you climb.
| Item | C1 / C4 | C7 / C8 | C9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tear of Illusion | Chance-based | Guaranteed | Guaranteed |
| Faint Origin of Dark Hunger | Not listed | Chance-based | Guaranteed |
| Resplendent Lightstone (Earth / Fire / Wind) | Chance-based, x1 | Chance-based, x1-2 | Guaranteed x2 each |
| Essence of Dawn Box | Not listed | Guaranteed x2 (C7), x3 (C8) | Guaranteed x3 |
| Trace of Thunderbolt | Not listed | Guaranteed | Guaranteed |
| Bonghwang / Haetae / Girin | Fragment | Tear | Tear |
Read the last row carefully, because it is the cleanest piece of design in the patch. The Bonghwang, Haetae and Girin items come as a Fragment at Calamity 1, a Crystal at Calamity 4 and a Tear at Calamity 7 and above. It is the same item family at three grades, and the grade is decided by the tier you beat rather than by a drop roll. That is a strong argument for pushing to Calamity 7 specifically: it is the first rung where that family reaches its top grade, and it is also the first rung where a Tear of Illusion stops being a lottery.
Calamity 9 does something similar for the Origin. At Calamity 7 and 8 the Faint Origin of Dark Hunger appears in the chance-based list; at Calamity 9 it moves into the guaranteed list and disappears from the chance list entirely, alongside a guaranteed Resplendent Lightstone of Earth x2, Fire x2 and Wind x2. If the Origin is the thing you are chasing, Calamity 9 is the only tier where the weekly reward guarantees it.
There is one line that gets worse. Gold Bar 100G pays x2-7 at Calamity 7 and x0-6 at Calamity 8, then drops to x0-4 at Calamity 9, while Gold Bar 1,000G rises from x2-3 to x3-4. Calamity 9 is therefore not a strict superset of Calamity 7 - it trades small gold bars for big ones and adds the guaranteed rares on top. Fine if you are chasing the rares, mildly annoying if you were using the 100G bars as steady filler income.
Coins scale worst, Black Stones scale best
Midpoint the ranges and divide Calamity 9 by Calamity 1, and the reward pool stops looking uniform. Your AP requirement grows 1.39x across that span. Almost everything else grows faster - except the one currency the deleted quests were converted into.
| Line | C1 midpoint | C9 midpoint | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum AP | 310 | 430 | 1.39x |
| Sangpyeong Coin | 57 | 139 | 2.44x |
| Trace of Nature | 10.5 | 28.5 | 2.71x |
| Memory Fragment | 10.5 | 35.5 | 3.38x |
| Embers of Hongik | 9.5 | 34.5 | 3.63x |
| Essence of Dawn | 9.5 | 34.5 | 3.63x |
| Black Stone | 20 | 80.5 | 4.03x |
| Sealed Black Magic Crystal | 1 | 7 | 7.00x |
| Gold Bar 1,000G | 0.5 | 3.5 | 7.00x |
Now break the coin line into steps, because that is where the decision actually lives. Calamity 1 to 4 adds 45 coins for 45 AP - exactly one coin per AP. Calamity 4 to 7 adds 29 coins for 45 AP, or 0.64 per AP. Calamity 7 to 8 adds 4.5 coins for 15 AP, or 0.30 per AP. Calamity 8 to 9 adds 3.5 coins for 15 AP, or 0.23 per AP. The coin yield is front-loaded and then flattens hard, which means the top two rungs are the worst Sangpyeong Coin content in the mode on an AP-adjusted basis.
That is exactly why the 2,500-coin quest compensation matters so much. Those five quests pay more coins than 42 Calamity 1 clears, and they pay them without asking for 300 AP, let alone 430. Anyone who is short on Sangpyeong Coin for an exchange should finish the Talekkebi's Trials line before considering a higher tier.
Black Stones and Sealed Crystals scale 4x and 7x while the coin line manages 2.44x. Climb for the materials, not for the currency.
The number went down, the gate went up
Here is the change most likely to be read backwards. The requirement for receiving Blessing of the Morning moved from Calamity 7 or higher to Calamity 5 or higher. Five is a smaller number than seven, so at a glance the blessing got easier. It did not.
| Version | Tier needed | Gear needed for that tier |
|---|---|---|
| Before October 22 | Calamity 7 | None - Calamity 1-7 ran on equalised AP and DP via the Light Orb |
| After October 22 | Calamity 5 | 360 AP for the five original bosses, 365 for Bari's band, 370 for Oduksini and Imoogi |
Under the old system Calamity 7 was a Light Orb tier, which meant a player at 250 AP could walk in with equalised stats and walk out with the blessing. Under the new system Calamity 5 requires 360 to 370 AP. The threshold number fell by two, and the real requirement rose from nothing to 360-plus AP. If you had the blessing before October 22 and you are below 360 AP now, you have lost it - not because Pearl Abyss targeted the buff, but because the floor moved underneath it.
The genuinely player-friendly change in the same paragraph is the prerequisite removal: defeating a Calamity 5 boss is no longer required to challenge Calamity 6 or 7. Previously you had to clear the rung below before the rung above. Now the only gate is the AP number. Combined with the Adventure Log change below, that removes a whole category of forced filler clears.
The Adventure Log cleanup saves clears, not silver
The most quietly valuable line in the patch notes is this one: defeating a Black Shrine boss on a higher Calamity now also completes all lower-level Adventure Log entries for that boss. Before, the log tracked each rung separately, so a player who could comfortably clear Calamity 9 still had to go back and beat Calamity 1 through 8 to fill the book. That is eight extra clears per boss, times nine bosses, and none of them paid anything you needed.
That change alone probably saves a mid-geared player more hours than any reward increase in the patch. It also changes the correct order of operations: if you are working on the Adventure Log, start at the highest Calamity you can clear rather than the lowest, because the book now fills downward. The old advice - work up from Calamity 1 - is now actively wasteful.
The last cleanup is cosmetic but worth knowing if you use the buff timer. The top-of-screen notification and first-clear message for defeating Calamity 1 through 9 bosses have been removed, and Blessing of the Morning buff notifications are no longer displayed. If you relied on that on-screen text to tell you the blessing was active, you now have to check the buff bar.
Blue Whale, Magaia, and the PvP floor
Three other changes shipped in the same patch and are worth a paragraph each, because they touch content this site already covers.
Blue Whale loot was overhauled, with the official reasoning stated openly: other content's revenue grew, so captains stopped sailing out. Great Ocean Oil went from x1-2 to x10-12, Blue Whale Tendon from x5-7 to x12-15, and Blue Whale Meat from x15-20 to x17-20. The interesting line is Wildspark, which moved from a chance-based x100-150 to a guaranteed x60-80. That lowers the ceiling and raises the floor, and the break-even is easy to compute: at an old drop rate of 56 percent the two versions paid the same average, so unless the old chance was better than that, the guaranteed version is a net gain. The drop rates of the three Blue Whale bone items were also doubled outright.
| Blue Whale drop | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Great Ocean Oil | x1-2 | x10-12 |
| Blue Whale Tendon | x5-7 | x12-15 |
| Blue Whale Meat | x15-20 | x17-20 |
| Wildspark | x100-150 (chance-based) | x60-80 (guaranteed) |
| Cranial / Chest / Tail Bone | - | Drop rate doubled |
Marni's Realm in the Magaia Temple monster zone was expanded, and the location of the Vestige of Everlight in Magaia Temple changed. If you were running Magaia as an Agris Fever sink, the expansion matters more than it sounds - it lengthens the uninterrupted window before you have to leave the realm, and Magaia is already one of the strongest Fever-to-silver conversions in the game on a per-monster basis.
And in PvP, the minimum AP applied to an attacker when the target's defensive stats exceed the attacker's offensive stats was raised from 5 percent to 7 percent. Pearl Abyss framed this as a response to a defence-heavy meta where high-DP builds could put out real damage and crowd control while being hard to punish, particularly in 10v10 formats. In plain terms: stacking DP is now slightly less of a free pass than it was last week.
The bottom line
| Your situation | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Under 300 AP | ✗ Locked out - the Light Orb removal put a 300 AP floor on content that had no requirement before |
| 300-355 AP | ✓ Calamity 1 - first gear-gated rung, and the Hyperboost quests now point here |
| 355-400 AP | ◐ Calamity 4 - roughly double the C1 loot, but still no guaranteed Tear of Illusion |
| 400-430 AP | ✓ Calamity 7 - the value tier: first guaranteed Tear, and the item family reaches top grade |
| 430+ AP | ✓ Calamity 9 - guaranteed Faint Origin plus x2 of each Resplendent Lightstone |
| Short on Sangpyeong Coin | ◐ Do the quests, not the climb - 2,500 coins for five Talekkebi-line quests beats 42 Calamity 1 clears |
The honest summary of the October 22 rework is that Pearl Abyss traded accessibility for integrity. Black Shrine had a structural problem: equalised stats below Calamity 8 meant that as players geared up, the supposedly easier tiers became harder than the harder ones. Deleting the Light Orb fixes that problem completely. The cost is that the mode no longer has a gear-agnostic entry point, and a meaningful group of players who used to farm Calamity 1 through 7 every week now cannot enter at all.
For everyone above 300 AP, the rewards justify the change. The guaranteed-drop restructuring at Calamity 7 and Calamity 9 is a real improvement over rolling for a Tear of Illusion at every tier, the Adventure Log now fills downward so you stop re-clearing rungs you have outgrown, and the Calamity 5 prerequisite removal deletes a step that existed only to slow you down. The ceiling is temporarily gone with Calamity 10 suspended, and the coin line flattens badly at the top - so pick your tier by what you need, not by what is highest.
Two things to do this week. First, check whether you still have any of the five Talekkebi-line quests unfinished, because 2,500 Sangpyeong Coins is the best return in the patch and it does not care about your AP. Second, if you were relying on Blessing of the Morning and sit below 360 AP, plan around losing it - the number went down, but the gear requirement went up, and no amount of re-reading the patch changes that.
