Players love to quote success rates. Almost nobody quotes expected attempts, which is just 1 ÷ rate — at 5% that's 20 taps on average. And 'on average' hides the brutal reality that many players need 2–3× that. Let's use real 2026 numbers.

The math of 'average'

Take a TET boss weapon at a 150+ failstack: roughly 5% per tap, so ~20 expected attempts. With cron stones on top-end gear, one tap can cost over a billion silver — meaning the expected bill is often 20+ billion. Most players treat PEN like a single big purchase and are shocked when it costs 2–3× the headline price.

Real 2026 success rates

AttemptFailstackApprox. rate (boss gear)Expected taps
PEN boss gear100–110 FS~3.3–3.6%~28–30
PEN boss gear150+ FS~5%~20
PEN Blackstar150+ FSlower than boss gear30+

Softcaps matter: past roughly 100 FS on most gear, each additional stack adds less (gains drop from ~0.03% toward ~0.006% per stack). More FS is not linear value — this is where over-stacking quietly wastes silver.

Why reality hurts more than average

Expected value is a long-run average. In one player's lifetime you don't get the average — you get one path, and variance at 5% is enormous. A meaningful fraction of players need 40–60 attempts. The hub calculator's 'probability within budget' box is the honest number: at 5% with a 20-tap budget, your success chance is only ~64%.

How to actually cut the cost

  • Cron stones: ~2M silver each from the NPC (melting a premium outfit yields roughly 400 crons). They don't raise the rate, but they stop the downgrade — the cheapest way to keep a TET base alive across many taps.
  • Failstacks: higher FS raises the rate and lowers expected attempts. Build 100–150+ before a PEN tap.
  • Buy vs. craft check: a PEN Dandelion often lists around 110B silver; cronning it yourself runs ~122B expected (17 taps × ~7.2B). When the market price sits below your expected crafting cost, buying wins.
  • Advice of Valks / event buffs: stack every legal bonus before the big tap.
  • Patience: rates and events fluctuate; tap during the best window, not on a bad day.

Who should chase PEN

YouPEN verdict
F2P / casual✕ Not your goal yet — TET is a fine ceiling
Active grinder◐ One PEN eventually — pick the highest-impact piece
Whale✓ Chase or buy it — silver is renewable, time isn't
Rule of thumb: PEN isn't 'expensive,' it's 'expected to waste tens of billions.' The players who enjoy it are the ones who decided that number in advance and didn't flinch when it arrived.
