Imperial Cooking is BDO's answer to 'I want reliable silver without babysitting a grind spot.' You cook meals, hand batches to an Imperial Cooking NPC, receive boxes, and sell those boxes on the Central Market. The system is always active, the demand is constant, and unlike rare drops, the income lands like clockwork — which is why it is the recommended first serious life skill on this site.

What Imperial Cooking is

Imperial NPCs in every major city buy cooked meals in bulk — but not every meal, and not forever. Each NPC offers a daily set of requested meals; when you hand in the full request, you receive an Imperial Cooking box worth far more than the meals inside.

The box is the product. Selling the box is where the margin is — the same logic as the silver-ore guide, one step further up the value chain.

The full loop

  1. Source ingredients — from your worker empire, gathered nodes, or the market when the price is right.
  2. Cook meals at a stove until you have a stack of the requested meal (Imperial NPCs request exact meals and counts).
  3. Hand the stack to the Imperial Cooking NPC in a major city (Heidel, Calpheon, Valencia, Grána) for the daily request.
  4. Receive the Imperial box and sell it on the Central Market — boxes move steadily.
  5. Repeat daily. The loop is semi-AFK: cooking itself is a few active minutes per batch, everything else is waiting.

The daily Imperial request resets, so the efficient rhythm is a short cooking session whenever you play, then turn-ins through the day.

Which meals to cook

The right meals are the ones whose boxes sell and whose ingredients you can source cheaply — which changes with the market. The stable classics (meals built from grain, meat and vegetable nodes) are the safe baseline: their ingredients are worker-farmable and their boxes always move.

The trap is cooking a 'prestigious' meal whose box does not sell on your server. Check the market box price before you commit a cooking session to a new meal — the silver is in the box, and only some boxes sell.

Why mastery gates the profit

Cooking mastery raises your proc rates: more meals per ingredient batch, more rare procs, and access to better recipes. The practical effect is that Imperial Cooking income roughly doubles or triples between Professional and Master+, which is why the advice is always the same — push one life skill to Master+ before judging it.

Mastery also unlocks the family-wide benefits of the September 2026 life-skill gear update: one gear set now boosts cooking, alchemy and gathering together, which lowers the cost of the mastery gear that gates the real numbers.

The honest numbers

Mastery levelSilver/hr feel (semi-AFK)Verdict
Professional200-400MMeh — level first
Artisan400-700MReal income begins
Master+600M - 1B+The guide numbers

These are 2026 community figures and swing with box prices and ingredient costs on your server — but the shape is stable: the profit curve climbs with mastery, and the floor stays high because boxes always sell.

The bottom line

Imperial Cooking is the reliable silver loop: cook, hand in, sell the box. Push it to Master+, feed it with a worker empire, and check the box market before cooking new meals — do that and it is the steadiest semi-AFK income in the game.

Once the loop is running, add a second life skill (alchemy or gathering) and the two semi-AFK incomes stack into a full idle economy.
