Every gear tier in BDO has a moment where the community realizes the old 'final' weapon is not final. For the past couple of years that weapon was PEN Blackstar. In 2026 it is Sovereign — and unlike Blackstar, which demanded either years of enhancing or a fortune at the market, Sovereign has a free lane built into HYPERBOOST that hands you the crafting materials as stage rewards. The only question left is whether you understand the recipes well enough to not waste them.
What Sovereign weapons actually are
Sovereign is the top weapon tier added with the 2026 endgame updates — one main-hand, one awakening and one sub-weapon version, each crafted at the Phoenix statue on Bonghwang Mountain in Land of the Morning Light rather than enhanced from an existing weapon. They sit above PEN Blackstar in the progression order and are the weapons the new endgame content is balanced around.
The important mental shift: Sovereign weapons are not an enhancement path from your current weapon — they are a craft. You bring materials to the statue, and out comes the Sovereign weapon at its base state. That is why the material list matters more than any failstack advice, and why the recipe table below is the whole guide.
The crafting recipes, straight from the patch notes
Pearl Abyss publishes these recipes in the official notices, and they differ between the main/awakening weapons and the sub-weapon. Here is the full list as documented in the 2026 patch notes:

For most players only one method matters: method 2 on each row, because that is the exact material set HYPERBOOST provides. The boss-gear methods exist for veterans who have PEN Kutum/Nouver with 20 Caphras sitting in storage and would rather spend those than farm a Flame of the Primordial.
Two materials deserve a closer look because they are the bottleneck for everyone. The Flame of the Primordial is made by heating 100 Primordial Embers — 50 come from Land of the Morning Light world-boss stamps and 50 from the Olvia Academy coin exchange, which is why new players are pointed at world bosses early. The Gem of Twilight comes from a quest in the Olvia Academy combat course, and completing it is what saves you the expensive Caphras-based alternative.
The free HYPERBOOST path (stage 2)
Stage two of HYPERBOOST is titled around the Sovereign weapons for a reason: the track is designed so a fresh or returning character walks away with all three crafted. The material grants work like this:
- Five PEN (V) Blackstar weapon selection boxes — with a limit of two per slot, so plan the split (e.g. 2 main + 2 awakening + 1 sub) before you open anything.
- One Flame of the Primordial — assembled from the 100 Primordial Embers covered above; the world-boss stamps and academy coins are both part of the track.
- One Gem of Twilight — from the academy combat course quest, which also removes the need for the Caphras-heavy alternative.
The boxes come from four places inside the track: challenge quests (available once you hold a level 61+ character and finish one of the listed main-quest lines — Mediah, Winter Mountain, Land of the Morning Light or the simplified growth quests), the Olvia Academy enrollment gift, the family combat rewards, and enhancing a PEN (IV) Blackstar you receive into V with the track's guaranteed-enhance support. Nothing in that list requires silver you do not already earn along the way.
The two-per-slot limit is the one rule players actually break. HYPERBOOST grants five Blackstar weapons total and the game will not let you hold three of the same slot, so the safe default is two main, two awakening and one sub — which covers all three Sovereign crafts if you also use the track's Flame and Gem on the right rows.
The Inverted Heart of Garmoth upgrade
Crafting the Sovereign weapons is only half the story. Each Sovereign main and awakening weapon can take an Inverted Heart of Garmoth for +3 AP each — the upgrade that pushes the pair from 'great weapon' to current BiS, and the one veterans remember as a 200-hour grind.
In 2026 the requirement was cut in half: you get one heart at 100 hours of cumulative playtime (down from 200) and a second by completing the Olvia Academy combat course. If you are already inside HYPERBOOST, both milestones arrive naturally before the track ends — the hearts are effectively part of the package.
Who can skip the grind — and who cannot
- New and returning players on HYPERBOOST: do not skip this. Stage two is the highest-value part of the whole track, and the materials expire in value if you leave them unclaimed.
- Veterans with PEN Blackstar and deep Caphras reserves: you can craft directly with the boss-gear methods, but check whether your time is better spent finishing the academy course for the free Gem of Twilight first.
- Players below endgame AP: Sovereign is a capstone, not a shortcut. If you are still building Kharazad accessories or Slumbering Origin armor, those come before weapons in priority order — the weapon is the last expensive box you tick, not the first.
A note on what comes after: the same 2026 update cycle added the four Slumbering Origin armor pieces (the eternal-tier versions of Labreska's, Fallen God's, Dahn's and Ator's gear) as Black Shrine calamity-8/9 rewards — that is the 694 stage of the HYPERBOOST route, and it pairs with the Sovereign weapons to form the current endgame set.
The bottom line
Sovereign is a craft, not a gamble: bring the listed materials to the Phoenix statue and the weapon is yours. HYPERBOOST now supplies the exact ingredients for all three — the only real skill involved is not breaking the two-per-slot rule.
If you are on the track, decide your slot split before you open a single box, craft via method 2 on each row, and save your two Inverted Hearts for the main and awakening upgrade. If you are a veteran, the free Gem of Twilight from the academy course is the single best silver-saving quest in the game right now.
