Pets in BDO auto-loot drops, and more pets mean a wider, faster loot pickup radius. On paper that sounds cosmetic. In practice, at any serious grind spot, loot hitting the ground and despawning is wasted silver — and pets are the only thing that stops it.
Why pets matter at all
Every pet adds to a shared loot pool and widens pickup coverage. With one pet you'll constantly watch loot sit on the floor. With four or five, almost everything is scooped before it can despawn. For life skills (butchering, collecting) pets also speed gathering. They are one of the few Pearl items that directly protect your silver, not just your time.
The free path: how far quests get you
You can earn a few starter pets through quest lines and events without spending a pearl. That's genuinely enough to function as a new or returning player learning the loop. The catch: free pets are slow and few, so at low AP you'll outgrow them fast. 'Free pets are fine' is only true while your income per hour is low.
The realistic number by playstyle
| Playstyle | Recommended pets | Why |
|---|---|---|
| F2P / brand new | Free quest pets (1–2) | Learn the game; loot loss is small at low AP |
| Casual grinder | 4 | Covers most spots; biggest quality jump |
| Active grinder | 5 | Near-complete pickup at popular spots |
| Whale / min-maxer | Max (often more via events) | Time saved is the product being bought |
When to actually spend
Pets rotate into sales frequently, and seasonal events sometimes bundle them. The correct play is identical to Value Pack: wait for a sale, stack a few, never pay full price. A single full-price pet is a patience tax you don't need to pay.
The pet-shaped tax traps
- Buying pets at full price instead of waiting for a sale.
- Chasing a specific cosmetic pet skin when the stats are identical to a cheaper one.
- Assuming more = infinitely better — past 5 the per-pet gain is marginal.
Rule of thumb: If you grind even a few hours a week, pets pay for themselves in loot you'd otherwise watch disappear. The free ones teach you the loop; the paid ones stop the leak.
