Every BDO enhancement failure has a sting: your gear can downgrade a level — or, on accessories, vanish entirely. Cron Stones remove that sting: when you tap with Crons, a failure keeps your gear at its current level. That is valuable, but Crons cost silver (or pearls), so the real question is whether the protection is worth its premium on the item you are tapping. It is insurance, and insurance is a good buy on expensive things and a bad buy on cheap ones.
What Cron Stones do
- When you enhance with Cron Stones active, a failed attempt does not downgrade or destroy the gear.
- The success chance is unchanged — Crons only affect the failure outcome, never the odds.
- Cron cost scales with the gear's value and enhancement tier: expensive taps cost more Crons.
- They can be bought with silver on the Central Market or with pearls; event bundles also drip them.
That second point is the one most new players get backwards — Crons are not a luck charm. You are paying to cap your downside, nothing else.
The insurance math
The correct mental model is expected value. Compare two numbers on every tap: the cost of the Crons, versus the cost of the downgrade outcome times its probability. If Crons cost less than the expected loss from a downgrade, they are worth it; if more, they are a tax on your patience.
Concretely: on a PEN accessory attempt where a failure destroys a 30B item, the expected loss dwarfs the Cron cost — Crons are almost always correct there. On a DUO attempt on a 500M weapon where a failure just drops it to PRI and you can re-buy it for pocket change, Crons are pure waste.
When to use them
- Accessory taps at TET/PEN level — accessories break on failure, so the protection is worth the most here.
- High-value weapon/armor steps (TET to PEN on expensive boss gear) where a downgrade costs billions to undo.
- Late-season taps on gear you cannot re-buy cheaply on your server.
The common thread: the more a single failure costs you in replacement silver, the better the insurance deal is.
When never to use them
- Low-tier taps (PRI/DUO) on gear you can buy off the market for less than the Crons.
- Taps on gear you do not actually need — Crons do not fix a bad target decision.
- Chasing 'one more tap' on a stack you should have stopped — if you are tilted, Crons just make the tilt more expensive.
A quieter trap: players who always tap with Crons because they are 'safe' bleed billions that would have been better spent on the next upgrade. Insurance is a tool, not a habit.
How to get them cheaply
Cron Stones are buyable on the Central Market with silver (price swings with events) and obtainable from season rewards, Dark Rift and event bundles. Pearl bundles are usually the worst value — treat pearls as the emergency source, not the main one.
If you tap regularly, bank Crons when the market is low (event periods flood supply) so you never pay peak price mid-tilt.
The bottom line
Cron Stones are insurance, not luck: they protect value on failure without changing your odds. Use them when a single failure costs more than the Crons — PEN accessories and expensive boss steps — and skip them everywhere else. Never let Crons become a habit that funds bad decisions.
The cheapest protection is still the one that costs nothing: failstack discipline and stopping before tilt. Crons cover the gear; discipline covers the wallet.
